Erlangen is a fascinating little city in the middle of the European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg. It is not only a good place to work, it is also a great place to live. The region boasts an outstanding density of companies specializing in medical engineering and important supply chains in the midst of a unique cultural landscape and natural countryside. Whether you prefer the hustle and bustle of life in Erlangen city center, or the slower pace of life in the local region, there is no shortage of things to do in your free time, and you are sure to find the place that suits you best. Thanks to its central location, Erlangen can be easily reached by all means of transportation, and offers convenient connections to the other towns and cities in the region. It is hard to think of anywhere that could offer a better quality of life.
Lively city life in downtown Erlangen
Erlangen is both a baroque university town and a dynamic little city. As our Universitätsklinikum Erlangen is located directly in the city center, vibrant urban life with a pedestrian mall, small stores and inviting bars and cafés is only a stone’s throw away. Most of our buildings are located around the Schlossgarten in Erlangen, a popular oasis in the city center, where citizens, students and recovering patients all like to relax.
Good transportation connections
We are located in the center of Erlangen and Erlangen is well connected to all travel routes. The highways A73 and A3 basically go past our front door and Erlangen station is well connected and served by intercity rail (ICE trains). Nuremberg main station is a major transport hub located approximately 20 km away, and can be reached in roughly 20 minutes by train. Berlin main station can be reached in less than three hours if you take the ICE train, and Nuremberg airport is not far away at all. The international airport of Frankfurt/Main is roughly two hours away by either car or train.
A popular region for global players
We are not the only ones to have recognized the benefits offered by the region. A number of global players are also based here. Siemens has its global headquarters in Erlangen. The companies adidas, PUMA Europe and Schaeffler Technologies are based in Herzogenaurach. Two of the largest employers in Nuremberg with over 1,000 employees are Bosch and DATEV. With the three major manufacturers Schwanhäußer Industrie, STAEDTLER Mars and Faber-Castell, the Nuremberg region is considered the center of the global pencil industry. That apart, the region is also home to a number of less well-known but nonetheless successful local companies such as Baumüller, GfK, LEONI, MEKRA Lang, SEMIKRON, Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics and UVEX SPORTS. This makes for an open environment with an international focus.
Nature, culture and cuisine in the region
Erlangen offers a high quality of life, with a mixture that offers something for everyone. A beautiful varied landscape, historic buildings and an active culture and culinary scene mean that you will never get bored.
Countryside
Erlangen is the gateway to Franconian Switzerland and in the direct vicinity of the Franconian lake region, the Steigerwald and a number of natural parks offering a wide variety of options for your leisure time and sporting activities for those who love the outdoors.
Experience culture
Castles, stately homes, palaces and neighboring UNESCO world heritage sites in the region are just some of the cultural highlights you will find here, alongside numerous theaters, museums and music festivals.
Culinary delights
Our Franconian lifestyle is characterized by a number of culinary specialities. In the Franconian beer region a young, fresh restaurant scene offering award-winning cuisine is popping up alongside the more traditional beer garden and pub culture, meaning that in combination with international restaurants there really is something for everyone and every taste.
At the heart of the European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg
Europe is growing, and that entails certain challenges. The European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg was established in 2005 to boost the region’s visibility on the international stage. It includes 23 districts and eleven independent towns, all of which work together as partners for the wellbeing of the region and all the people who live there. And Erlangen is at the heart of it!
