Intensive care in nephrology and hypertension

Our main focus

On our intensive care ward we care for postoperative patients and patients suffering from sepsis, intoxication or multiple organ failure involving the kidneys, lung, liver or heart. We also provide intensive care for patients after a pancreas or kidney transplant and for immunocompromised patients. Our nursing staff carry out all common kidney replacement methods round the clock. We basically operate our own dialysis center within our intensive care ward. Some of our patients only remain on our ward for a short period of time while others stay for an extended period. Since spring 2020, we are also one of the three intensive care wards where patients with Covid-19 are treated.

What to expect as a member of the nursing staff on our intensive care ward in nephrology and hypertension

Nephrology covers the entire spectrum of sepsis that can be triggered by any number of underlying causes. Our patients present primarily with nephrological, hemato-oncological or cardiosurgical conditions. Once the onboarding phase is completed and you are confident in carrying out all intensive care tasks, we train you in our ward’s own particular concept concerning kidney replacement methods, taking your previous experience into account.

We use the very latest equipment and methods for treating our patients, including extracorporeal life support systems that can carry out the functions of the kidneys, lungs, liver and heart, in particular hemofiltration and hemodialysis. We also make use of citrate anticoagulation.

Our staff can and should work on their own initiative, whilst complying with certain ground rules. We will accompany you on your journey and will train you to become a specialist nurse with expertise that you can use in your daily work. We are a fairly small ward, and as such are well suited for you to make your first experiences with intensive care. Our team is a good mixture of experienced staff and colleagues who have only joined us within the last five years.

“Our patients are our key concern. Thanks to our motivated, skilled and strong team, we can interact with them at all times. We get the best results as we also focus on and listen to our staff.”

Andreas Goldhardt, ward manager, specialist nurse for nephrology

“UKER is a fully equipped university hospital and therefore offers me the best conditions to provide professional individual care with a human touch for the patients entrusted to me and their relatives. At the same time, I can rely on the support and backing of my team at all times.”

Ayda Altün, specialist nurse in intensive care/anesthesiology
