Intensive care in gastroenterology, pneumology and endocrinology

Our main focus

In our intensive care unit, we care for patients from all areas of internal medicine. On the one hand, we treat pulmonary and respiratory diseases, for example asthma, severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). On the other, we also look after patients suffering from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the metabolic system. This may include gastrointestinal bleeding, peritonitis, pancreatitis, liver disease or acute hormonal disorders of the thyroid. We also care for patients suffering from infections or poisoning.

“Our interdisciplinary team works in the varied specialist area of gastrointestinal and pulmonary conditions. Together with our colleagues, we constantly work to ensure the highest possible standard of intensive care for our patients. The digital intensive care charts and extensive medical technology support us in our varied area of responsibility.”

Maximilian Kistner, acting deputy ward manager, specialist nurse for intensive care/anesthesiology

What to expect as a member of the nursing staff on our intensive care ward in the Department of Gastroenterology, Pneumology and Endocrinology

Our team is a good mixture of very experienced nursing staff and those just starting their career. A well-structured onboarding process tailored to the individuals’ previous experience is very important to us. Our nursing instructors offer regular specialist training courses during the onboarding process and fill you in on the situation on the ward while introducing you to our structures and procedures. We offer regular internal training courses on the ward, generally once a week.

We have the entire range of modern intensive care medicine at our disposal to treat the various conditions. We work with cutting-edge technology to monitor vital functions, with mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive), with ECMO and ILA therapies (mechanical lung replacement and assist processes), and with continuous hemofiltration in the event of acute kidney failure.

We provide emergency care for both the Department of Medicine 1– Gastroenterology, Pneumology and Endocrinology, and Department of Medicine 3 – Rheumatology and Immunology, as well as emergency care for the Institute of Radiology and our central emergency room in the Center for Internal Medicine. For cases when rapid intervention is required, our clinic has its own endoscopy department.

“The pleasant size of the team and the friendly atmosphere were the main reasons why I asked to be transferred to this team.”

Martina Hensel, nurse, currently undergoing training to specialize in intensive care/anesthesiology
