Our medical and technical assistants make a vital contribution to patient care and research at UKER. All these tasks are important and significant in their own way during the treatment process. Our staff in auxiliary professions not only ensure smooth collaboration between the various professions, they also make a significant contribution towards providing our patients with the best possible care thanks to their skills and dedication.
Our technical anesthesiology assistants (ATA)
As an ATA you care for our patients both during surgery and diagnostic procedures, whenever sedation is required. As the initial point of contact for our patients, you accompany them while they are preparing for and receiving anesthesia until they wake up in the recovery room.
Your tasks
Your work begins with preoperative care as soon as our patients are brought into the operating room. It ends when they wake up from the anesthesia. At Uniklinikum, you work in accordance with anesthesiology standards, and use cutting-edge anesthetic procedures and provide medical and nursing care for preventing delirium.
Career opportunities
As a technical anesthesiology assistant, you are part of our anesthesiology nursing care team. Your work is organized centrally in our Anesthesiology Department and you are assigned to one of our main operating rooms depending on your specialty. You also assist in functional diagnostic assessments if the examination requires sedation.
Possibilities for development
At UKER we place considerable emphasis on your skills and qualifications and offer a professional development program with a wide range of courses for professional and personal development at our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions. We also offer resuscitation and simulation training courses that you are expected to attend.
Taking on responsibility
You can choose to specialize in areas such as occupational safety, hygiene, ethics, the Medical Devices Act, prophylactic measures against bedsores, or in pain and wound management.
We are always pleased if you gain further qualifications to become a nursing instructor and pass on your knowledge to others. Or if you choose to get involved in our subject-related working groups in which we explore ways of making our processes sustainable and fit for the future. If you would like to assume a more managerial role, you can take on responsibility as the manager or deputy manager for a certain area.
Vocational training at UKER
At Uniklinikum Erlangen, we also offer vocational training to qualify as a technical anesthesiology assistant (ATA).
“By working as an ATA in anesthesiology care in many different areas across the hospital, I can gain an insight into a wide range of different medical areas of specialization. I care for patients of all ages and am particularly interested in pediatric anesthesiology. I enjoy taking on responsibility and I like the fact that I can care for my patients the whole time until they wake up from anesthesia.”
Nikolai Balzer, technical anesthesiology assistant
Our medical assistants (MFA)
The opportunities for medical assistants (MFA) at UKER are just as varied as the diverse medical fields within our Uniklinikum. As a hospital providing supramaximal care, we offer you career opportunities going way beyond the scope of the work expected from an MFA in a local doctor’s practice. With us, you always work at the cutting edge of medicine and technology. Your workplace is located in modern premises with the latest technology and you make a direct contribution to our patients receiving treatment in accordance with the latest scientific findings.
Your tasks in our clinics, institutes and departments
Our MFAs are responsible across our numerous departments for tasks ranging from the organization of professional workflows to taking over delegated medical procedures in their specific area of specialty. They work closely with our physicians and with colleagues from other professional areas and use their skills to ensure optimal patient care. The relevant job advertisements state which tasks will be expected of you in each particular case. In our clinics and medical departments, for example, you could work in our outpatient clinics or in patient administration as well as on certain wards. The job advertisement states where you would work.
Your tasks in our nursing service
As an MFA in our nursing service you either work in our outpatient clinics or as a ward or team assistant in one of our “support centers” where you are responsible for administrative tasks. A further area you may choose to work in is supporting our nursing service in providing patient care. Or you can use your expertise in one of our functional areas such as the emergency room or the endoscopy unit. Another option is in our nursing service in the operating room, where you are responsible for bringing patients in for surgery or standing in wherever you are needed. The specific tasks you are responsible for in our nursing service are stated in the job advertisement.
Opportunities for development
Depending on your place of work and the tasks you are responsible for, there is a wide range of opportunities for continued professional development. You may choose, for example, to undergo further training in wound management or quality management. Or you can attend our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions to train as a study assistant.
Vocational training at UKER
At Uniklinikum Erlangen we also offer vocational training to qualify as a medical assistant (MFA).
“I chose to become a medical assistant because I love working with people. Talking with them, sometimes having them confide in me, is extremely important for me and is what makes my job here in the cardiovascular outpatients clinic so varied and exciting. In the three years that I have been working at Uniklinikum Erlangen I have been lucky enough to work with a great team where appreciation and collegiality are the order of the day."
Angela Fabbricatore, medical assistant in the cardiovascular outpatients clinic at Department of Medicine 2

Your tasks
Our MTLs always aim to achieve high-quality results. Bearing this in mind, we use the options available to us at UKER to also run tests on tiny quantities of samples in order to provide our patients with the best possible treatment. In some of our laboratories we work seven days a week in three shifts. Depending on the size of the area where you are deployed, you may also be able to take on managerial responsibilities.
Career opportunities
We offer the following areas in our laboratories:
- Clinical chemistry
- Hematology
- Coagulation/transfusion medicine (blood reserves)
- Microbiology
- Virology
- Immunology
- Histology/pathology
Depending on the laboratory, you either focus on one or on several areas. Details are given in the text of the specific job advertisement.
Your advantages
At UKER you have all the advantages of working under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement. You receive fair remuneration and have regulated and reliable working hours.
Vocational training at UKER
At Uniklinikum Erlangen we also offer vocational training to qualify as a medical technician for laboratory analysis (MTL).
“Our central laboratory works around the clock to provide results from the analysis of routine and special parameters in blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. Our exciting and challenging work with high-quality analytical equipment takes place behind the scenes, with us contributing to the best possible patient care in this way. We appreciate our regular working hours and the low staff turnover in our area.”
Darja Petrov (left), Sindy Wilhelm, medical technicians for laboratory analysis in the central laboratory
Our medical technicians for radiology (MTR)
You have various options available for working as an MTR at Uniklinikum Erlangen. The Institute of Radiology, the Department of Radiation Oncology, the Institute of Neuroradiology and the Department of Nuclear Medicine all offer a variety of different tasks. Each area has its own focus and its own special medical products. What they all have in common is that they work at the cutting edge of medicine and technology and always act for the benefit of our patients.
Vocational training at UKER
At Uniklinikum Erlangen we also offer vocational training to qualify as a medical technician for radiology (MTR).
“I have been responsible for human resources planning for our MTRs in diagnostic radiology for many years now and I lay great emphasis on a family-friendly working environment and teamwork. We are only able to provide cutting-edge medical care if we treat each other fairly. As the practice coordinator, I am also responsible for our trainee MTRs. I really enjoy accompanying them during their first-class training towards becoming the excellent MTRs of the future. For me, the focus is always on people. And by that I mean patients just as well as my colleagues.”
Antje Heunemann, deputy senior MTR and practice coordinator in the Institute of Radiology
Our surgical technical assistants (OTA)
As an OTA you are responsible at UKER for pre-and post-operative preparations in the operating room. You are also on hand to assist in predominantly oncological or highly complex surgery, for example transplants or reconstructive surgery.
Your tasks
You are responsible for pre- and post-operative preparations in the operating room, including the instruments required for and used during the surgery. You are responsible for providing all materials and checking medical equipment. You operate our medical devices and assist in lifting and positioning patients. You are involved in cutting-edge surgical procedures, providing the required instruments and standing in wherever you are required. Your portfolio stretches from operating large surgical fraises to using extremely delicate instruments. You assist both during short surgical procedures as well as operations lasting the whole day.
Career opportunities
As a surgical technical assistant, you are part of the nursing service in our operating rooms. You either work in one of the 16 operating rooms belong to our main operating complex covering ten different areas, or you work in one of the operating rooms connected to our clinics and departments focusing on one specialty. Other possible areas of work include the endoscopy unit or the reprocessing unit for medical devices. Details of your specific place of work are given in the job advertisement.
Or if you get involved in our subject-related working groups in which we explore ways of making our processes sustainable and fit for the future. If you would like to assume a more managerial role, you can look to become a shift coordinator, a ward manager or their deputy.
Vocational training at UKER
At Uniklinikum Erlangen, we also offer vocational training to qualify as a surgical technical assistant (OTA).
“As an OTA, I really appreciate the excellent interdisciplinary collaboration in the operating room attached to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. My job is varied and I assist during surgery in the areas of obstetrics, laparoscopy, plastic surgery and major abdominal surgery. We perform operations that have a high degree of standardization. As a nursing instructor, it is also important to me that I treat new colleagues as equals while I’m showing them the ropes.”
Melanie Koch, surgical technical assistant in the operating room at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Our study assistants
At Uniklinikum Erlangen, we conduct studies and clinical trials at various different phases. The study assistants involved in these trials have a wide range of different tasks. These range from analyses in laboratories to office work or activities involving direct patient contact. The exact tasks depend on the requirements of the trial, but as a rule you are always expected to be proficient in English. As a study assistant, you make a considerable contribution to the smooth running of studies and clinical trials, thereby contributing to the success of medical progress for the wellbeing of our patients.
Your field of work
In order to allow new medicines and treatments to be used, clinical trials involving large numbers of patients are strategically planned, systematically checked and carefully analyzed at Uniklinikum Erlangen. This gives our physicians greater confidence in using the new treatment methods, as the trials give them insights that allow them to better assess who the therapies are most suited for and what advantages they have. Patients who meet the requirements for participation in the clinical trials receive treatment that would not otherwise be available to them.
Opportunities for professional development
At our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions, you can train for this exciting job of study assistant.
„Als Studienassistentin arbeite ich mit verschiedenen Teams sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb unseres Uniklinikums zusammen. Wir begleiten die Teilnehmenden unserer Studien teilweise über Jahre hinweg. Dieser enge persönliche Kontakt mit den Patientinnen und Patienten und die Teamarbeit in der Studienzentrale sind für mich der perfekte Ausgleich zu der Schreibtischarbeit, die mit klinischen Studien immer verbunden ist.“
Susanne Becker, head study assistant in Department of Medicine 4
Our dental assistants (ZMFA)
As a ZMFA, you can choose from four different clinics at Uniklinikum Erlangen, each of which focuses on a different area of dental treatment, to find the one that interests you most and suits you perfectly. We conduct research in all four clinics and always treat our patients using cutting-edge technology and in line with the latest findings in the field of dentistry. As a ZMFA, you are also responsible for supervising our dentistry students at UKER, who are undergoing training for working in the field in the future.
Department of Operative Dentistry and Periodontology
Our outpatient clinic is the first port of call for patients who are in pain or have had an accident affecting their teeth. Our ZMFAs assist our dentists during the required treatment. They are also responsible for registering our patients and organizing appointments at reception. That apart, they also have organizational tasks aimed at ensuring the smooth running of student courses. They are also responsible for preparing instruments and ensuring hygiene. By carrying out prophylactic measures such as professional teeth cleaning, our ZMFAs make a vital contribution to our patients’ dental health.
Department of Prosthodontics
Our aim is to offer our patients aesthetic and functional, high-quality care tailored to their individual needs and based on the latest prosthodontics. In our department, each treatment room acts like its own small dental practice. Our ZMFAs are responsible for arranging appointments and preparing the treatment room. You assist at the dental chair and accompany our patients until their prosthodontic treatment is completed.
Department of Orthodontics and Orofacial Orthopedics
Our work covers the whole spectrum of orthodontics and orofacial orthopedics and is aimed at creating functional harmony between the upper and lower jaw with aesthetically pleasing teeth. Our ZMFAs arrange appointments and prepare for the treatment. They assist at the dental chair and are in charge of preparing the dental instruments and the relevant documentation. They accompany all our patients, from the youngest who start treatment while they are still babies, to our older patients over a time span of many years. This allows them to make a contribution to and experience the successful completion of the treatment.
Department of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery
Work in the Department of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery is always exciting and varied thanks to the wide range of diseases we treat. Our ZMFAs are responsible for preparing for our outpatient operations and assist during them. They are involved in our various specialized consulting hours, coordinate the appointments and welcome our patients when they arrive at reception.

“The thing that touches me most is the gratitude of the patients we care for before and after their surgery. It is lovely to see how happy the child and their parents are after we have operated on their cleft lip and palate. Or if we are able to give implants and dentures to someone who has had cancer to help them smile again.”
Carmen Nendel, head of the outpatient and private patients’ clinic at the Department of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery
