Sounds interesting?
Who we are:

The Research Training Group (RTG) 2740 which has started on January 1st 2022, is a research consortium funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation). It consists of 11 research groups focusing on the in situ analysis of micromilieu factors and metabolites in the context of microbial infections (https://www.immunomicrotope.de/). The RTG 2740 is located at Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg, one of the largest research universities in Germany.
For our project “Micromilieu control of Salmonella virulence” within the RTG 2740 we are looking for an open and dedicated PhD student with a great interest in microbiology and infection biology research. In cooperation with the group of Prof. Dr. Jonathan Jantsch (University Hospital Cologne), the project aims to investigate the impact of intestinal environmental signals, such as hypoxia, to modulate Salmonella virulence functions. The understanding how Salmonella virulence is triggered in response to intestinal environmental cues might aid the development of anti-virulence strategies.

Your tasks:

Starting from January 1st 2025, the work program includes:
  • Generation of Salmonella mutants
  • Comparative transcriptomics of bacteria and infected host cells
  • Cell culture infection models
  • Reporter gene studies
  • ..and more!

Comments:

Please include in your application a recent curriculum vitae, a short letter of motivation, copies of your exams (university entrance, Bachelor, Master) and other things which can help us to choose you!

Essential experience/qualifications:

  • Successfully completed M.Sc. degree in the field of life sciences (biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular medicine or similar)
  • Hands-on experience working with bacteria
  • Excellent skills of the English language (spoken and written) incl. presenting research data
  • Willing to participate in the supervision of practical courses, Bachelor- and Master students

Additionally beneficial are:

Experience in the following areas is an advantage:
  • Molecular pathogenicity research with BSL2 organisms
  • Hypoxia research
  • Data analysis using R and/or Python, especially transcriptomics
  • Molecular biology: cloning, mutagenesis, recombination
  • Use of reporters (fluorescence, luminescence)
  • Cell culture techniques, e.g. cell lines, organoids
  • Microscopy, e.g. CLSM, live-cell imaging

We offer:

We offer a friendly, stimulating, collaborative, international and creative working environment within excellent laboratory facilities available at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene of the University Hospital Erlangen (https://www.mikrobiologie.uk-erlangen.de/en/). You will participate in the 3-year training program of the RTG2740, which combines profound, internationally oriented scientific education with an early exposure to important aspects of translational research. You will have the ability to participate in national and international workshops, symposia, conferences and lab visits. A team of scientific mentors, including two scientists from outside your group, will support and advice you throughout the research training program. The payment is according to the German federal pay scale: 65 % of pay group E13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TV-L).
