Sounds interesting?
Who we are:

In the Malaria Research Group of the Institute of Microbiology at the University Hospital Erlangen we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD candidate who is interested in investigating host-pathogen interactions in the human malaria parasite P. falciparum, the pathogen that causes most of the severe malaria cases worldwide. The position is funded for three years through the DFG Research Training Group RTG 2740 “Immunomicrotope”, Project B1.

Your tasks:

In this project we aim to elucidate how different micromilieu factors present during malaria infection influence the parasite's virulence and development. You will apply state-of-the-art methodologies such as genome wide RNA and chromatin sequencing approaches, high resolution imaging techniques, and CRISPR/Cas9 mediated genetic manipulations to study the underlying molecular mechanisms. This will lead to a better understanding of how malaria parasites react to environmental changes and how this can be exploited for novel anti-malarial therapies.

Comments:

  • We welcome applications from suitably qualified people from all sections of the community regardless of ethnical background, gender or disability.
  • Please send your application including a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, copies of the university entrance exam, bachelor exam and master exam, as well as two letters of recommendation as a single PDF file labled with your name. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Essential experience/qualifications:

  • Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in life sciences such as e.g. biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and spoken English-language communication skills and a strong interest in working as part of an international team of researchers.

Additionally beneficial are:

  • A strong background in molecular biology, (epi-)genetics, RNAseq and ChIPseq analysis, and bioinformatics is desired

We offer:

  • An exciting, relevant research topic in a highly stimulating, collaborative working environment.
  • A DFG funded fixed-term position for 3 years.
  • Participation in a 3-year training program of the RTG2740 which combines profound, internationally oriented scientific education with an early exposure to important aspects of translational research.
